What we fund

Sustainable approaches to diabetes care and primary prevention

WDF projects should focus on diabetes care, primary prevention and/or advocacy. See the World Diabetes Foundation’s intervention areas for details.

Projects should require minimum WDF funding for salaries and indirect costs. To enhance the prospects of sustainable outcomes, WDF expects your project to be aligned with the needs of targeted beneficiaries, local systems and priorities.

What we don’t fund

• Medication

• Construction of buildings

• Basic laboratory research or other exclusive research projects

• Travel grants for conferences, meetings, etc.

• Educational grants - long term basic or specialised training

• Primary health care work without focus on/link to diabetes prevention and care

• Establishment of parallel structures

• Heavy equipment (vehicles and tertiary care equipment, unless justified by project design)

• External consultants (unless justified by project design and local context)

• North/South approach (unless justified by local context)

• Project staff component should be kept to a minimum

• Per diem/daily allowances where cost of participation, transport and accommodation is also covered through the project budget

WDF does not fund core running costs, including:

• Salaries/incentives for permanent staff

• Rent

• Electricity

• Internet

• Telephone

• Procurement of medicines

• Test consumables (strips, reagents etc.) for long term continuation of activities

Guideline on administration fee/overhead:

Administration cost should not exceed 7% of the subtotal. The boundary between general administration costs and direct project spending may appear less than clear-cut, but the following types of expenses within the organisation can only be covered by the administration fee:

• Office maintenance (rent, cleaning, office expenses, transport, electricity and water, assistant personnel and other common operational costs).

• Staffing of head office (and field office, if any) carrying out normal administrative procedures, including: The preparation of applications and other proposals, costs of travel that does not form part of activity-specific monitoring. Recruitment and selection of personnel unrelated to any specific project, meeting activity, contacts with the WDF Secretariat, reporting assignments, general budgeting and accounting tasks.

• The organisational leadership’s involvement in the cooperation (leadership refers to members of the various governing bodies).
