To support the Government of South Africa with enhancing the national policy framework for diabetes, and strengthening detection and quality care of diabetes at provincial and district levels.
The project seeks to strengthen the national and provincial diabetes response by addressing gaps in diabetes awareness, diagnosis, care and management. WDF’s support is structured into the following two levels:National response: • Coordination of NCD stakeholders through the development of a diabetes action plan that builds on the 2022-2025 national NCD Strategy, formation of national and provincial NCD intersectoral coordinating mechanisms, and leading annual NCD stakeholder forums. • Revision of clinical diabetes guidelines, including the development of an abridged clinical user guide for primary health care (PHC).• Development of national training and IEC materials (information, education, and communication materials), • Strengthening NCD surveillance, • Training of health providers at PHC and community levels.• Supportive supervision and advocacy meetings with relevant national and provincial health authorities.Provincial and district response: • Capacity building of provincial and district NCD coordinators • Establishment of 9 provincial NCD intersectoral coordinating mechanisms. • Establishment of community-based diabetes support groups, including training of peer educators.
• 200 PHC facilities across all 9 provinces, including training of 4,150 HCPs (1,300 doctors, 2,100 nurses, 450 community health workers, and 300 other health staff) through in-person training and virtual learning platforms strengthened .• 180 peer educators trained.• 60 provincial and district NCD coordinators trained. • 9 provincial and 1 national NCD intersectoral coordinating mechanisms established. • Diabetes training and IEC materials developed. • national NCD action plan and national clinical user guide for diabetes management developed.• 3 national stakeholder forums conducted.
