Universal health coverage is in a new era of convergence, a positive trend that this project aims to leverage and accelerate. It will do this by implementing the Kenya MoH National NCD Prevention and Control Strategic Plan (NSP) 2021-2026 with a focus on diabetes and hypertension at primary health care level.
The proposed project builds on the two preceding phases of direct WDF support towards Kenya’s national diabetes/NCD response, which have been implemented successfully over the past decades. This past work has contributed significantly to the Kenya MoH national NCD strategic plan’s advancements. However, work remains to reach the primary care level at nationwide scale.The MoH has recently launched a new NCD strategy 2021-2026. This project represents an unprecedented opportunity to support Kenya’s commitment to build a strong, integrated, nationwide response to NCDs at the primary health care level and across communities.Through the project, multisectoral NCD policy and financing dynamics will be strengthened, all 47 Kenyan counties will be supported to establish adequate NCD programme management structures, and a detailed assessment concerning NCDs and capability needs will be undertaken.The project design covers three overall dimensions: governance and decentralisation, health system capability, and advocacy and operational research.
At least 350 health centre units provided equipment and other resources, and at least 2,000 HCPs trained. 3,500 community health workers trained and provided resources 1,800 peer advocates trained, and more than 350 patient support groups established. 120,000 diabetes patients and 200,000 hypertension patients have been offered care at the primary level. 500,000 people considered at risk of diabetes and hypertension will have been screened.At least 35 HCPs trained in supply chain management.The national health information and management system (HIMS) has integrated patient data from at least 35 counties.
