To support the implementation of the MoH Thailand national NCD strategy 2017-2021 with focus on primary level care and community outreach.
This project is initiated from the 5-Year National NCDs Prevention and Control Strategic and Action Plan (2017-2021) in alignment with the 20-year national strategy of Thailand which aims to improve NCD treatment at the national level.Thai National Health Examination Survey V indicates that the percentage of Thai individuals aged 15 and over who are diagnosed with diabetes has increased from 6.9% in 2009 to 8.9% in 2014. The survey also reveals that of the 4.8 million people living with diabetes (2014), only 2.6 million are diagnosed and receiving care. Of these patients, only 35.6% achieve their treatment targets, an outcome that may be related to the high level of diabetes patients living with one or more complications.Knowledgable and skilled HCPs in rural areas of Thailand are scarce, and thus this project seeks to educate multidisciplinary health care professionals on how to manage patients with diabetes in NCD clinics, which will help improve both blood sugar control and quality of life. The project will also focus on teamwork among multidisciplinary health care professionals - doctors, nurses (case managers), pharmacists, physiotherapists, dietitians/nutritionists and village health volunteers - to help enhance referral processes in diabetes across health regions in Thailand.
