Diabetes education and awareness, Zimbabwe

Objectives

To expand diabetes care and prevention across all of the Midlands Province within the framework of the Zimbabwe MoH's national NCD response.

Approach

Training of nurses and provision of equipment and training / education material.
Capacity building of CHWs working with the targeted clinics on diabetes care and management through training workshops and camps.
Education of diabetes patients in self-management based on IDF curriculum on diabetes health education.
Basic diabetes services to be launched at the targeted primary health facilities, and community awareness activities to be rolled out through public awareness programmes at clinics, churches, schools, work places and other public areas.

Results at completion

Improved diabetes services established at 80 MoH owned clinics
313 HCPs and 1,117 CHWs trained on diabetes care and prevention
7,148 patients with type 2 diabetes and 433 with type 1 diabetes educated in self-management
At least 58,800 people reached directly through awareness activities
