Diabetes awareness and care project in Nigeria

Objectives

To raise awareness of type 2 diabetes, its risk factors and prevention in targeted communities in Akwa Ibom and the FCT
To improve access to diabetes care through training of healthcare workers and screening (early detection) for type 2 diabetes
Improve the availability, quality and use of type 2 diabetes data for decision making

Approach

The project will improve access to diabetes care (screening, patient education and referral) through capacity building of HCPs (doctors, nurses and community health workers) and by providing equipment, diabetes management guidelines and IEC materials to selected clinics across the two states (Akwa Ibom and Abuja / FCT).

In each of the two states selected CSOs will be responsible for community mobilisation, awareness and screening camps in the communities and the CSOs will further assist in monitoring and reporting on project results.

In both states, extensive community awareness campaigns will be rolled out and the campaigns will include risk assessment and screening and patients detected will be referred to targeted health facilities.

Local level health personnel, incl. health department and hospital managers, medical directors and secondary HCPs will be sensitised on diabetes and enhancement of referral mechanisms throughout the project.
Finally, the project will have a strong focus on monitoring of services and clinical indicators incl. strengthening of data collection on diabetes and integration into national level HMIS.
