1. To educate school children in diabetes, diabetes prevention, and nutritious cooking.2. To create awareness of diabetes among the general population and secure sustainability of the project through advocacy.3. To strengthen the health posts and district hospital with equipment for screening, testing and treatment of diabetes.
Initially the project will target capacity building of teachers across the targeted district within primary prevention of diabetes and health promotion. This will be done through training workshops. Trainers will facilitate continuous trainings and will provide supervision and feedback to teachers.School-based health promotion will be rolled out and will include establishment of vegetable gardens and kitchens at schools. The trained teachers will provide health education and include physical activity as part of curriculum and will furthermore teach nutritious cooking classes for pupils and their parents. Provision of vegetables for cooking will be taken from the school gardens and students will be involved in maintaining of these gardens.Health awareness camps will be implemented across the targeted communities. The camps will include health lectures, games and street dramas and will be organised by trainers, schools and the District Health Office. Students, their families and community members will be mobilised to attend camps through school activities and radio awareness campaign (radio is considered main media channel in Nepal).Access to basic diabetes screening and care at community level (presently only available at district hospital) will be strengthened through training of primary level health care professionals (HCPs) and through the provision of equipment to the health posts. The trained HCPs will provide basic screening services for parents and other community members. A referral mechanism between awareness camps, primary clinics and district hospital will also be established.Dialogue and policy meetings with district and central level authorities will be organized to promote project learnings and to potentially advocate for replication of the project model to the entire district and to other districts.
