The project seeks to strengthen hyperglycaemia in pregnancy modalities of the Indian health care system through implementation of a pilot model in three states.
The Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) will develop a special training modality and provide training to healthcare professionals (HCPs) at three large public hospitals and three private health facilities, one of each category in three different states of India (Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka) . Project activities will be implemented together with the hospitals and health facilities and through collaboration with the AVNI Foundation India, and supported by the health authorities at federal and state level, and by FIGO International. Special emphasis will be given to the development of a comprehensive learning resource tool on hyperglycaemia in pregnancy, based on existing FOGSI/FIGO material, and the tool will be piloted before larger-scale roll out of trainings. This roll out will be facilitated by 40 ‘master trainers’ who are clinical experts from each hospital/health facility. One main goal is to introduce universal screening for hyperglycaemia in pregnancy to all women receiving the services and to maintain regular contact with the women before and after birth. Another main target is to provide necessary care to women detected with hyperglycaemia (gestational diabetes) and to ensure satisfactory fetal outcomes and avoid complications during birth and post-partum. The approach is considered a pilot given that capacity to screen and provide care will be established at a level hitherto unseen in an Indian context. Moreover, through the project FOGSI will mobilise ‘hyperglycaemia in pregnancy champions’ from within the targeted hospitals/facilities, who shall promote the new modality across states with authorities and other health care facilities, etc.
