The Philippines is experiencing rapid population growth and urbanisation. At the same time the lifestyle is changing to an everyday life with high calorie intake and low level of physical activity. These changes are all fuelling the rise of diabetes in the country and it is estimated that the Philippines will be among the top ten countries with the highest number of diabetes cases by 2030.Despite the rise in diabetes, hyperglycaemia in pregnancy remains largely unknown in the Philippines. Hyperglycaemia during pregnancy poses great health risks and therefore a structured approach to diagnosis, treatment and prevention is needed. ObjectivesThe aim of the project is to develop and implement a pilot model for GDM targeting the public healthcare system in two areas of Metro Manila. To achieve this, the project will train healthcare providers within GDM detection, management and care.
The project targets women at risk of developing hyperglycaemia during pregnancy living in poor, urban areas, currently without access to appropriate care. The pilot project will be implemented at two district hospitals and two primary health units and includes provision of GDM screening and care.Capacity for detection, management and post-partum follow-up of women with hyperglycaemia during pregnancy will be built within a multidisciplinary group of healthcare providers working in the public healthcare system. Training curriculum, protocols and IEC materials will be aligned with the FIGO/IADPSG guidelines and adopted to the local context in collaboration with local experts. The pregnant women with hyperglycaemia who attend the clinics will receive appropriate care and will be monitored closely. Trained healthcare providers will also undertake home-visits after delivery to assess post-partum outcomes of mother and child. Educational sessions on healthy lifestyle will be rolled out for the women and their families.
