Improving diabetes health care delivery, Indonesia

Objectives

In recent years, the prevalence of diabetes and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs) has increased in Indonesia. Today, the country is among the top five countries in the world regarding the number of people with diabetes.

With improvements in socioeconomic conditions, a rising life expectancy, and lifestyle changes, the prevalence of diabetes is expected to increase even further during the following decades. In recognition of the increasing incidence of NCDs, the Ministry of Health in Indonesia has developed a national policy and strategy for preventing and controlling NCDs.

The present project seeks to improve diabetes care in Indonesia through a holistic approach that targets all three healthcare system levels.

The project seeks to improve the capacity of preventing, detecting, and treating diabetes in Indonesia.

Approach

The Indonesian Society of Endocrinology (PERKENI) will carry out the project in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Indonesia. The project aims to improve diabetes care delivery by training healthcare staff in diabetes education and management in six districts of Indonesia.

1. Training Material Review: Initially, existing training materials will be reviewed and modified by the current situation in the area.

2. Training for Internists and General Practitioners: Internists working at district hospitals and general practitioners working at primary healthcare centres will be trained in diabetes management. The training aims at increasing the knowledge and clinical skills of the participants.

3. Training for Health Care Providers: Healthcare providers will be trained in diabetes education. The training will enable the participants to educate people with diabetes and their families properly.

4. Improvement of Referral System: Throughout the project period, meetings will be held between local health authorities and representatives from primary healthcare centres and district hospitals to improve the referral system in the area of diabetes.

Results at completion

- 125 internists trained in diabetes management.
- 539 general practitioners trained in diabetes management.
- 573 educators trained in diabetes management.
