Diabetes is on the rise globally, and Yemen is no exception. Currently, 327,000 people in the country have diabetes, projected to quadruple in the next 30 years. Unfortunately, diabetes and other non-communicable diseases have not received the prioritization they deserve in Yemen, and the long-term consequences of poorly controlled diabetes are not widely recognized. This project aims to bring primary and secondary diabetes prevention to the forefront of the healthcare agenda in Yemen. The project aims to enhance diabetes care in Yemen by establishing a national reference centre for diabetes care and control. This involves training healthcare personnel and providing education and treatment for individuals with diabetes.
The project follows a multi-partner approach involving the Yemeni Diabetic Association (YDA), the Ministry of Health (MoH), and the Al Saleh Social Foundation for Development (SFD). A Center for Diabetes Care and Control (CDCC) will be set up at the Al Thawra Modern General/Teaching Hospital (TMH), providing expert assistance, administration, and financial oversight for the project. The CDCC will focus on delivering health education and care to individuals with diabetes, including specialized assistance for complex cases. Healthcare professionals from both the public and private sectors will receive training in diabetes prevention and management. In addition to these efforts, the project aims to raise awareness about diabetes among the general population through an awareness campaign. This campaign will involve the distribution of informative materials, the creation of a diabetes newsletter, and the use of radio and TV spots.
