The project aimed to develop a standard diabetes education curriculum to improve the quality of diabetes care in Sub-Saharan Africa. The project was led by IDF Africa Region, and 11 countries participated in the project: Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda and Zambia.Considering the socio-economic differences within the Sub-Saharan region, the task force aimed to develop a standard diabetes education programme for diabetes educators. The core curriculum was produced in English, French, Portuguese and Kiswahili.A standard patient education programme was developed under a parallel project (WDF02-007).
Diabetes Education Training Manual for sub-Saharan Africa developed and made available in printed version to each member association in the IDF Africa Region in English, French and Portuguese.Under a parallel project, the Type 2 Diabetes Practice Guidelines for Sub-Saharan Africa was developed.Dissemination and implementation of both documents were done in 11 out of 12 countries in the region (Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda and Zambia).
