Advocacy

Despite being the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have long received inadequate political or financial attention from the global health community compared to other conditions,  receiving less than 2% in development assistance for health. Today, more than three quarters of NCD mortality occurs low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), imposing large and preventable costs on already stretched health care systems.

WDF has since its inception engaged in advocacy and stakeholder mobilisation on numerous occasions and in numerous contexts.

Our approach is to be at the forefront and influence the conceptualisation of the global NCD dialogue, to ultimately increase the political and financial commitments towards diabetes and other NCDs in LMICs.

WDF therefore prioritises interventions promoting and raising the priority accorded to NCD prevention and control, with focus on diabetes, within global, regional and national agendas of health and development.

WDF supports interventions that focus on:

•    Promoting policy processes and advancements in the NCD/Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda
•    Promoting development financing and co-financing in the NCD/UHC agenda
•    Promoting the role of civil society and other non-state actors
•    Disseminating and promoting results and learnings from WDF investments

WDF's Advocacy work is guided by the principles of Integrated Care, Life-Course Approach, and Universal Health Coverage.
